On Saturday October 1st, 2022, The International Mountain Bicycling Association and MTB Atlanta will be celebrating “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” for 2022.
While we don’t have any scheduled events, we do have some suggestions for some great places to take your kid out on the MTB Atlanta Trail Network for a ride on Saturday.
First up is one of the best places for bike instruction in Metro Atlanta, North Copper Lake Bike Park in Smyrna. North Cooper Lake has a bicycle playground, hard surface pump track, two slope style runs and great cross country trails all with great access right off the main parking lot. North Cooper Lake Bike Park is located at 4201 N Cooper Lake Rd, Smyrna, GA 30082.
If you live on the East side of the Metro or in Athens check out the General Time Skills Area and Loop just off of Loop 10 across from Terrapin Brewery. Built by MTB Atlanta Pro Trails, this trail and skills area was tailor made for kids, beginners and experts alike and is an awesome place for the whole family to ride. Address for General Time is 100 Newton Bridge Rd, Athens, GA 30607.
If you are looking for a great progressive pump track and the largest skate park in the state, check out C Jay Smith Park in Newnan. Just off the Linc Trail, the skate park and pump track built by Newline Skate Parks is incredible. The pump track is truly progressive with beginner to expert lines and is a great place to session with your kids. C Jay Smith’s address is 92 Farmer St, Newnan, GA 30263.
Also in Coweta County is the small but mighty Cannongate Nature Park with one of our MTB Atlanta Pro Trails built “Gateway Trails.” Gateway Trails are shorter trails in pocket parks and a result of our effort to bring “More trails close to home.” These trails are designed for all levels of riders and for promoting bike handling skills while being fun to ride laps on. The trail at Cannongate is a true gem for families and is 1.25 miles of action packed riding. Parking area for Cannongate Nature Park is located across the street from 423 Cannongate Rd, Sharpsburg, GA 30277.
Another brand new “Gateway” trail that is perfect for kids and beginners is the Sourwood Trail at Campbellton Creek Nature Park in the City of South Fulton. This new park and trail is a real gem just west of the airport and a great way to immerse your kids into the woods at just the right distance. The trail is a little over 2.5 miles but can be split in the middle to make a shorter ride. Campbellton Creek Nature Park is located on Plummer Road and on google maps as Campbellton Creek Nature Park.
The Evergreen Trail at Southside Park in the City of Atlanta is a go to spot for kids just 5 miles from downtown ATL at 3460 Jonesboro Road Atlanta 30354. Southside is home to 7.5 miles of purpose built single track for passive outdoor recreation and the Evergreen Trail is the perfect place for your kids to cut their teeth on a ride in the woods on some classic single track.
Lastly Brown’s Mill Park in Coweta County has a great Beginner trail and the longer Intermediate 3.1 mile “Outer Loop” is perfect to take your older kids out for a longer, more challenging ride. The park is truly a go to for youth cycling in the Metro as it is home to Coweta Parks and Recreation Mountain Bike Camps in the Summer, the main practice trail system for the Georgia Cycling Association’s Middle and High School SWAY Mountain Bike Club teams and home to the “Junior Rippers.”
Wherever you choose to ride, Saturday is looking like some prime fall riding weather, so grab your kids and a bike and get out on the 160 mile MTB Atlanta Trail Network for “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” 2022.
